Because of the stigma surrounding mental health, people are reluctant to seek help and reveal the growing abyss of anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and nightmares that accompany it. This stigma leads to the worst-case scenario, self-medicating. Now we have a co-occurring problem, the underlying depression and anxiety, but on top of that, an addiction to alcohol or drugs. That’s when lives can unravel. Health, jobs and families suffer, and housing is lost.

This is where Our Place Safe Haven’s importance as a vital resource on the road to recovery for mental health issues and homelessness is significant. Our Place Safe Haven is a 14-bed emergency shelter that provides basic needs so people can work on turning their lives around. The most vulnerable receive mental health treatment referrals, assistance in establishing a stable source of income, and help with obtaining permanent housing. Drop-in services include hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, phone messages, mail delivery, and case management.
We house homeless individuals throughout the County of Ventura from a variety of populations which include Veterans, TAY (Transitional Aged Youth), Seniors, along with individuals that are addressing mental health, substance challenges, and disabilities. We accept referrals by phone, walk-in or through agency partners at either One Stop location or our HMIS system.
Programs that address issues surrounding homelessness including Street Outreach, Homeless to Home, and Health Navigator all address critical components that affect our community and are staffed from Our Place Safe Haven.
