“Oaks dig deep roots during times of strife.”

growing works oak project

These are the words etched in a plaque at the Healing Garden, dedicated in memory of the victims of the Borderline Bar and Grill mass shooting in Thousand Oaks. We are grateful Growing Works could participate by giving out one thousand oaks at the unveiling of the memorial. Thanks to Growing Works donors, the young oak trees that our employees grew as part of their healing, offered healing to others.

Now we need to grow more oaks to replace the ones we gave away and multiply that by five! To grow 5,000 oaks we’ll need $15,000 to build additional infrastructure.

Your contribution will put the Growing Works employee “construction crew” to work building enclosures to protect the seedlings from critters.

The new oak trees we’ll grow this fall will be available for purchase, helping to support the Growing Works nursery and its job training and horticultural therapy program. The program provided by Turning Point Foundation has helped over a 100 people with mental health challenges.

We know oaks and other native drought tolerant plants are needed to restore hillsides burned in the recent fires. More trees are also needed to fulfill Ventura County’s goal to plant up to two million trees over the next forty years to combat climate change.
