Thompson, 805-652-2151, this 10 bed shelter provides a safe place to live where basic needs are met & the most vulnerable receive mental health treatment, assistance establishing a stable source of income, & help obtaining transitional housing with the goal of permanent housing. Drop in services include hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, phone messages and mail delivery and case management.
Our Homeless to Home & Community Outreach programs run out of Our Place Safe Haven as does our Health Navigator Program. There are four main goals of the Health Navigation program:
- Clients complete a health assessment;
- Clients are cleared of Tuberculosis;
- Clients are connected with a Primary Care Physician;
These actions resulted in a 50% Reduction in Emergency Health Services from the 12 months prior to receiving Health Navigation.
Turning Point Foundation’s Street Outreach Program showed Veterans were over 20% of the homeless population & 30% of those were suffering from mental illness. Turning Point felt compelled to take action & expanded our programs to address the needs of our veterans bringing together all the social services in Ventura County creating a safety net of support for those that have given so much. We remodeled a building for the Veteran’s Transitional Housing which opened in 2015.
River Haven Transitional Housing
12 years ago, Turning Point Foundation took a group of people living along the river bottom in tents and started them on the path to hope and the promise of better things to come: A new beginning at River Haven.
A new beginning at River Haven
If you haven’t been there, you have never seen anything like this! River Haven is a self-governing community of 23 formerly-homeless people. They have been living in cleverly-designed Geodesic domes that have surpassed their lifespan of five years. We are entering a new chapter in the River Haven journey and are investing in small houses made by Tuff Sheds as a replacement for the domes. Tuff Sheds are like “Tiny Houses” and have a 30-year warranty.
Funded by the community and Turning Point Foundation, River Haven has been helping homeless people turn their lives since 2006. Turning Point’s case managers help residents with securing a source of income, job training, medical attention, drug, alcohol and mental health services. In 2017 River Haven served 29 residents, and Turning Point’s case manager helped nine people to find permanent housing. Learn more about how Turning Point is helping 1,200 people throughout Ventura County to live more fulfilling, productive lives as members of our community.

Permanent Supported Housing
Permanent Supported Housing provides permanent supported housing for persons who were homeless and mentally ill.
These permanent housing programs are designed to assist residents in developing community living skills, increasing community integration and achieving permanent residential stability.
Most of these facilities are safe, secure, and affordable, located near transportation or in a mixed commercial and residential neighborhood, close to community resources and services. A house manager lives on site. Life skills and mental health services are provided by the case manager. Resident needs are assessed and a Housing Stability and Supportive Services Plans are created. Weekly house meetings are conducted to address shared living concerns. Our residents are expected to be involved in at least 20 hours of productive community activities and encouraged to utilize mainstream resources to become more engaged in community activities. In addition to receiving primary mental health treatment through Ventura County Behavioral Health, residents may also attend nearby programs at Turning Point’s Oxnard Clubhouse for rehabilitation services or the TPF Wellness Center for peer support services. Turning Point’s Mobile Wellness Program is in Villa Calleguas.
